What Is AEO?
Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) is the discipline of structuring content, data and digital presence so that AI answer engines — Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity — recommend your brand in their responses.
Traditional SEO asks: “How do I rank in the blue links?” AEO asks: “How does Copilot cite me as the answer?” The former puts you in front of users scanning a list. The latter puts you in the voice of their trusted AI assistant.
What Is GEO?
Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is a closely related discipline focused specifically on how generative AI models synthesise and attribute content. Where AEO targets the recommendation layer, GEO targets the generation layer — ensuring that when an AI writes a response, it draws from and credits your content.
Microsoft’s official playbook: “From Discovery to Influence: A Guide to AEO and GEO” was published January 2026 and is available as a free download via Microsoft Advertising.
Why AEO & GEO Matter Right Now
The timing is critical. AI-powered search is growing but not yet dominant — which means the brands that establish AEO authority now will hold that position as the channel matures. Establishing topical authority in AI engines requires consistent, structured, citable content published over months.
- 53% of US consumers plan to use generative AI for shopping (Adobe Analytics, 2025)
- Copilot daily active users grew consistently through late 2024 into 2025
- Microsoft Advertising search revenue grew 21% year-over-year in fiscal 2025
AEO Implementation: Core Tactics
1. Structure content for direct answers
AI engines prefer content that answers questions directly and completely. Use H2/H3 headings that mirror search queries. Write clear, factual opening paragraphs that standalone as complete answers. Include FAQ sections with explicit Q&A pairs.
2. Deploy FAQPage schema
FAQPage JSON-LD schema signals to AI engines that your content is authoritative answer content. Every guide, category page and product page should have FAQPage schema with 4–8 question/answer pairs targeting your key queries.
3. Establish E-E-A-T signals
Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness. AI engines weight content from demonstrated experts. Publish author bios, link to credentials, cite primary sources, and update content regularly (freshness signals).
4. Optimise for zero-click attribution
When Copilot cites your content, it may not generate a click — but it builds brand recognition and authority. Design content to be citable: clear quotes, specific statistics, unique frameworks that an AI can attribute to you.
GEO Implementation: Core Tactics
1. Create citable content assets
Original research, proprietary data, unique frameworks and expert opinions are more likely to be cited by generative AI than commodity content. Invest in studies, surveys and original analysis.
2. Semantic entity optimisation
Ensure your brand is an established “entity” in the semantic web: Wikipedia entry, Wikidata record, Crunchbase profile, consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) across all platforms, and Organisation schema on your website.
3. Copilot-specific optimisation
Microsoft’s Copilot draws heavily from Bing’s index. Ensure Bing Webmaster Tools is configured, IndexNow is implemented for instant indexing, and your site appears in Bing’s search results for your target queries.
How Copilot Sees Your Content
Copilot synthesises responses from multiple sources: Bing’s web index, Microsoft Advertising’s product data, and structured data from your website. To maximise visibility:
- Implement all relevant schema types: WebPage, Article, FAQPage, Product, Organization, BreadcrumbList
- Ensure pages load in under 2 seconds (Core Web Vitals)
- Use clear canonical URLs and an XML sitemap submitted to Bing
- Configure llms.txt to signal your preferred content for AI indexing
- Update content regularly — freshness is a strong AEO signal
