What Is Microsoft Clarity?
Microsoft Clarity is a free behavioural analytics tool that provides heatmaps, session recordings, and AI-powered insights about how users interact with your website. It is free with no data volume limits, and integrates directly with Microsoft Advertising for campaign-level analysis.
Why Clarity Matters for Copilot Advertisers
When users arrive at your site from a Copilot Checkout or Showroom Ad interaction, understanding their on-site behaviour is critical. Clarity answers questions like:
- Where do Copilot-referred visitors drop off in the checkout funnel?
- Are users from Copilot engaging with product details or bouncing?
- Which product images get the most attention (via scroll heatmaps)?
- Are rage-clicks or dead clicks indicating UX friction for AI-referred traffic?
Setting Up Clarity
- Go to clarity.microsoft.com and sign in with your Microsoft account
- Create a new project and enter your website URL
- Install the Clarity tracking script (direct paste, Google Tag Manager, or CMS plugin)
- Link your Microsoft Advertising account under Settings → Microsoft Advertising
- Verify the script is firing using the Clarity browser extension
Clarity data typically appears within a few hours of installation. Full heatmap data requires a minimum number of page visits to be meaningful (generally 500+).
Heatmaps
Clarity provides three heatmap types:
- Click heatmaps: Where users click on each page. Identify which CTAs drive engagement and which are ignored.
- Scroll heatmaps: How far users scroll. Critical for deciding where to place key content on long product pages.
- Area heatmaps: Cursor movement patterns that indicate attention and reading flow.
For Copilot advertising, analyse product page heatmaps specifically for traffic segments arriving from Microsoft Advertising to identify differences in behaviour vs organic visitors.
Session Recordings
Clarity’s session recordings capture full mouse movement, clicks, and scroll behaviour for individual sessions. Filter recordings by:
- Traffic source (set UTM parameters on your Copilot campaign links)
- Device type
- Sessions with rage clicks or dead clicks
- Sessions that reached (or dropped before) checkout
AI-Powered Insights
Clarity’s Copilot integration (within the Clarity dashboard) provides natural language summaries of your site behaviour data. Ask questions like “Where are users dropping off in checkout?” or “Which pages have the highest engagement from Microsoft Advertising traffic?” and receive AI-generated analysis.
