What Is Copilot Advertising?
Copilot Advertising is the collective name for Microsoft’s AI-powered advertising products built into the Copilot ecosystem. Unlike traditional banner or search ads, Copilot Advertising delivers ads inside AI conversations — contextually, conversationally, and at the exact moment a user is researching or ready to buy.

The Copilot Advertising Product Suite
The Microsoft Copilot advertising ecosystem comprises five core product categories, each targeting a different stage of the buyer journey.
Copilot Ads
Standard ads rendered inside Copilot conversations. These appear below organic AI responses in an “ad block” with a “Sponsored” label and Copilot-generated ad voice explaining why the ad is relevant. Access is through Performance Max and Search campaigns.
Showroom Ads
Interactive, immersive ad experiences that let users browse products, see configurations, compare features and read reviews without leaving the conversation. Available via Performance Max campaigns.
Copilot Checkout
Launched January 2026. Enables complete purchase transactions inside a Copilot conversation via Shopify, PayPal or Stripe integrations. Shopify merchants are auto-enrolled; PayPal and Stripe merchants apply directly.
Brand Agents
AI agents that represent your brand inside Copilot. When users ask about your products or category, your Brand Agent can respond with personalised guidance and purchasing options. Announced January 2026.
Performance Max (PMax)
Microsoft’s full-funnel AI campaign type that distributes ads across the entire Microsoft network — Bing, Edge, Outlook, LinkedIn, MSN, Xbox — with Copilot-powered optimisation. Samsung achieved 143% year-over-year revenue growth using PMax with Copilot.
Copilot Checkout: In-Conversation Commerce
Copilot Checkout is the most significant development in Microsoft Advertising since Performance Max. It eliminates the gap between product discovery and purchase by allowing the entire transaction to occur inside the Copilot conversation.
January 2026 Update: Shopify merchants are now automatically enrolled in Copilot Checkout. An opt-out window is available. PayPal and Stripe onboarding applications are open via Microsoft Advertising.
The user experience: a shopper asks Copilot for product recommendations, receives curated suggestions, and can complete checkout — including payment — without navigating to an external website. Microsoft’s infrastructure handles the transaction, with the merchant’s own checkout system processing the order.
Brand Agents: AI Shopping Assistants
Brand Agents represent a fundamental shift from passive advertising to active brand presence. Instead of waiting for a user to click an ad, your Brand Agent proactively guides users through discovery, consideration and purchase within the AI conversation itself.
A Brand Agent can answer product questions, make personalised recommendations based on conversation context, surface promotions, and route users to Copilot Checkout. They are configured through the Microsoft Advertising platform and learn from your product catalogue and brand voice guidelines.
AEO & GEO: The New Discovery Layer
Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) are now essential complements to traditional SEO. As more purchase journeys begin with an AI question rather than a keyword search, brands that structure their content for AI recommendation gain significant first-mover advantage.
Microsoft published its official AEO/GEO playbook “From Discovery to Influence” in January 2026, outlining strategies for optimising brand presence across AI assistants, browsers and agents. Our dedicated AEO & GEO Guide covers implementation in depth.
How Copilot Sees This
When a user asks Copilot about a product category, Copilot draws on multiple data sources to formulate its response: the Microsoft Advertising auction (for ad placement), the user’s conversation history and stated preferences, real-time product feed data, and organic web content structured for AI consumption.
Prompt template: “What are the best [product category] options available on [your platform]? I need [specific requirement] and my budget is [range].” — This type of high-intent conversational query is exactly where Copilot Ads appear.
